Obituary

Gene Edward Sanders
Born: May 25, 1957
Died: October 31, 2019

Gene Edward Sanders, 62, of Heflin, Alabama, passed away on October 31st, in Pueblo, Colorado after a 2-year battle with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Gene was born on May 25th, 1957 at Anniston Memorial Hospital, to Harvey and Celia Sanders. From a young age, Gene was very active in Boy Scouts of America, eventually receiving the high ranking of Eagle Scout and Order of the Arrow from Troop 206 in Heflin. After graduating from Cleburne County High School in 1975, Gene went on to graduate from The University of Alabama at Birmingham with a BS degree in Political Science. From there he went on to become a Respiratory Therapist, where he practiced at Carraway Hospital in Birmingham, Shelby Baptist Medical Center in Alabaster, and eventually retired from UAB Hospital in Birmingham after 30 years in healthcare management. Gene was active in and played an integral part in every community he called home. He chose to make Alabaster, Alabama his home where he raised his two children for many years. He was elected to the Alabaster City Council, as well as Chairman of Alabaster’s Water Board, and played an essential role as a member of the Alabaster Lions Club where he fought to enrich the civil and social welfare of his community. He cherished his family and loved being a father to his two children. Gene was a firm believer in Jesus Christ and was a member of Westwood Baptist Church for many years. Although he called Alabaster home, Gene moved to Colorado in 2017 to be close to his children while fighting Colon Cancer for the remainder of his life.
Gene was preceded in death by his brother Joe Neal Sanders, and his parents Harvey Eugene Sanders and Celia Nancy Teague Sanders.
Survivors include:
Daughter- Taylor Ryan Sanders (Nick) Grande
Son- Jonathan Edward (Whitney) Sanders
Sister- Janet Dawn Sanders (AL) Grizzard
Gene wished to be cremated and his two children to spread his ashes among the beautiful Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The family will have a “Celebration of Life” service in Heflin and plan to have a headstone placed at Lower Cane Creek Cemetery at a later date.
